Kerikeri MTB Club Newsletter - 3 October 2021

There is a that buzz in the air – maybe it’s the longer evenings and warmer days, maybe it’s the first cicadas of summer. 25 people brought their bikes out to our first summer ride last week. It was great to showcase our new Whitehills tracks on a sunny spring evening.

Working bees have been amazing in the last couple of months – with lots of willing hands of all ages and abilities, making many metres of benched track through the beautiful native area at Whitehills. Summer is looking sensational!!!

It’s AGM Time

Monday 18 October 5.30 at the Plough and Feather’s white outdoor room

5.30 - Grab a drink, order a snack and chat with your club mates

6.00 – Meeting starts – find out what the club’s been up to and elect a new committee.

The Plough and Feather are generously allowing us to use this venue at no cost – please show your appreciation by getting a drink or a snack from the bar.

Love riding with your mates, done a bit of digging over the winter and still want to do more for the club!

The committee look after membership, communication, manage the money, organise events and trips, and keep things sweet with the forest management.  There’s the usual President, Secretary and Treasurer, and a small team of volunteers.

Sound like a bit of you?? Chat to one of the committee members or come along to the AGM.  Current committee members are happy to continue but, as always, we’d love new ideas and energy.

Tuesday Night Rides Continue at Whitehills

This one’s for you!! We ride as a group and guarantee you won’t be left behind. Club rides are an awesome way to get to know our forests, our tracks and meet like-minded people. Just turn up.

Meet at the Whitehills forest gate at 5.30. The gate is on the left 8km north of Waipapa. Leave the winter lights at home!

A reminder that riders on Tuesday Club Rides need to be at least 16 or accompanied by a parent or adult who has agreed to take responsibility for them. Please – No drop-offs!

Need to know more about Tuesday rides - contact Richard 021386177

Weekend rides, at Whitehills and Inlet Road will be posted on Facebook

Where to Ride this Season

Inlet Road Forest

Harvest is again in full swing and the forest is closed Monday to Friday, for another 6 -8 weeks, including those long sunny evenings, BUT during the weekends, tracks outside logging areas are GOOD TO GO!  Grab your mates and get in there. You don’t have to wait for a club ride!!!

Tracks have had no maintenance over the winter so there’s a bit of pig action and windfall.  A track tidy-up working bee is on the cards – details soon.  Come along and show them some love!!

Whitehills Forest

Whitehills has lots of different groups using the forest including hunters. Kerikeri MTB Club has permission to build and use mountain bike tracks for CLUB ACTIVITIES only. Every club activity is negotiated with other forest users. Please respect this and come and check it out on club rides and working bees. Get your mates joined up so they can come too!

We have permission to ride, so please keep driving to a minimum and within your licence restrictions.  Shuttle days coming soon – watch this space.

Thanks to the sponsors!!

All this action doesn’t come free – Ground Effects have paid for the tools we use, Fintan, Evan and New World Kaikohe have sponsored days on the digger and there have been COUNTLESS hours of volunteer time on the tools.  Thank you!!!!!! We love your work!!!

Auto 1 have offered to sponsor our club shuttle trailer for the next 3 years so we will be able to keep it registered, insured and maintained. It should be in the forest having a test run some time very soon.

Our amazing young riders were set to take on their peers at the Secondary Schools Nationals this month, but like many other events the Covid Stop-Go sign has not been in our favour. Thanks to parents for their fundraising work and also to Pubs Charity for their contribution.

Events

A lot of uncertainty has meant no big events this year. But we are looking at some options for smaller light-hearted club competitions towards the end of the year. As always there will be opportunities to ride and opportunities to join the fun in non-riding roles.

In early 2022 KKMTB will be hosting the Northland Secondary School’s competition and we will be looking for helpers. If you’d like to be part of this, have a chat to someone on the committee and we’ll find you a job.
